| Introduction | The Austral
Dendroecological Fieldweek was held at San Martin de los Andes
in northern Patagonia, Argentina, in conjunction with the International
Conference on Dendrochronology for the Third Millennium held
in Mendoza from 2 to 7 April. The ADEF
was a chance for students and professionals attending the conference to
learn both basic and advanced methods in tree-ring research. Researchers
from all over the world attended, many of whom are working in new areas
or with new species and new applications in dendrochronological studies.
The format for the week followed those set by both the North American and European Dendroecological Fieldweeks. Organizers for the ADEF included Peter Brown and Paul Krusic, Co-Directors of the North American Fieldweeks, and our group leaders included Fritz Schweingruber, founder of the European Dendroweeks, and Tom Levanic, co-Organizer of this year's European Dendroecological Fieldweek in Mašun, Slovenia. Other research projects during the week were lead by David Stahle and Ed Cook. Our intrepid local organizer who made the week run so smoothly was Ricardo Villalba of the CRICYT Tree-Ring Laboratory in Mendoza. |

| Group
Projects |
We had four group research
projects this year, two looking at Nothofagus pumilio forests growing
at upper treeline in the Chapelco ski area above San Martin and two working
together with Austrocedrus chilensis on a dry site just above San
Martin. Group project reports can be found on the linked pages:

| Acknowledgments | We were extremely fortunate
to have the support of a number of organizations for the week, and we would
like to thank them for their generous use of facilities, funding for student
travel and expenses, and funding for travel for group leaders and organizers.
We especially thank Brian Luckman and the IAI for providing a bulk of support
for bringing in South American students for the week, and Hernan Cortes
and the rest of the staff at the Asentamieto Universitario San Martin de
los Andes, Universidad del Comahue who generously provided facilities in
San Martin.
